Penhaligon's is a distinctive, elegant, sophisticated and terribly British English perfumery brand. Each Penhaligon's fragrance is a masterpiece shrouded in a legendary aura, and it is for this reason that the British brand shines among the stars of the perfumery art world: world-famous, Penhaligon's offers olfactory accords linked to English tradition and an elite, refined production known for its authentic natural ingredients mixed with the latest in fragrance chemistry.
The brand is known for its natural, natural ingredients mixed with the latest in fragrance chemistry.
The history of Penhaligon's begins during the Edwardian decadence: this luxury perfume brand started its long and rich history in the Victorian era. During this era of traditional values and discoveries, William Penhaligon, a creative, enterprising and ambitious barber from Cornwall, decided to move to London and founded a barber shop in Jermyn Street around the end of 1860. Penhaligon devoted himself in his shop to the development and preparation of lotions, ointments and perfumes for his wealthy customers. London society was immediately impressed by his products. His fame even reached the Royal Family, who appointed William Penhaligon as Royal Barber and Profumer at the Royal Court.
William was a witty, creative perfumer and barber, always on the hunt for something unusual to tickle his fancy. His first fragrance, created in 1872, was Hammam Bouquet, in honour of the Hammam Turkish Bath in Jermyn Street. In 1902, Blenheim Bouquet was created, named after the palace of the Dukes of Marlborough: this fragrance soon became the favourite of all the nobility of the time, already beginning to define itself as one of the brand's iconic fragrances. To this day Penhaligon's perfumes are still made in England, using the rarest and most precious ingredients, from hand-pressed bergamot to jasmine at twice the cost of gold. Penhaligon's bottles are still exactly as the creator designed them: clear glass with the original distinctive ribbon on the cap.
For 150 years Penhaligon's has been creating perfumes to tell a story: whether it is Greek mythology, the tailors of Savile Row or the tales of the British aristocracy, Penhaligon's always knows how to describe reality through a perfume. This incredible power of evocation, capable of travelling through time and space, is what has made Penhaligon's perfumes iconic and loved the world over. Penhaligon's elaborates perfumes as true works of art. The fragrances are encased in elaborate, massive and luxurious bottles.
Irreverent and unique, Penhaligon's Portraits line joins a series of new launches, including Alizarin, Equinox Bloom and Oud de Nil. Penhaligon's presents its new Portraits collection dedicated to singular representatives of the English aristocracy and does so with all the salt of British irony: behind dramatic names such as Much Ado About The Duke and The Revenge Of Lady Blanche, elegant bottles with gold-plated animal heads as stoppers are concealed. The new collection contains four eau de parfums: The Tragedy of Lord George, which describes the peculiar fictional father of a small English family, a man loyal to king and country (a woody fougère with aspects of foam and rum, by Alberto Morillas). The Revenge Of Lady Blanche, which draws on narcissus, iris and hyacinth to paint a portrait of his wife, a socialite hiding a terrible secret. The Coveted Duchess Rose, in which Christophe Raynaud depicts the life of their unhappily married (if indeed married at all...) daughter to the eccentric, freedom-loving duke embodied in an effervescent leathery-pink fragrance, i.e. Much Ado About The Duke.
